Alcorn seniors Kendrick Walker, Ronnie Davis selected as White House Initiative HBCU Scholars
The White House recognizes two standout Alcorn State University students for their accomplishments in and out of the classroom.
Seniors Kendrick Walker and Ronnie Davis are two of 86 students chosen as White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Scholars. This is the ninth cohort of HBCU Scholars, recognizing undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for their academic accomplishments, leadership, civic engagement, and more.
Walker, the University’s second Mister Alcorn, appreciates the opportunity to showcase Alcorn’s excellence on a national stage.
“Alcorn has changed my life significantly, and it is with great pride that I represent my illustrious University,” said Walker. “This honor proves my hard work and dedication to my studies, the University, and the community. It broadens my horizons by allowing me to represent Alcorn on a national scale. I am excited to meet, network, and learn from like-minded peers and professionals. By upholding the honor of being an Alcornite and White House Initiative Scholar, I am an extension of Alcorn’s excellence.”
For Davis, setting a positive precedent for young scholars is essential. He hopes to be one of many examples of successful students emerging from HBCUs.
“It is important that I represent HBCUs on a broad stage so that generations after me can see how these institutions provide productive members of society,” said Davis.
The students understand the magnitude of their selections.
“It showcases what HBCUs produce and how attending an HBCU could be beneficial. In addition, it shows the dedication and support students receive from these institutions,” said Davis.
“Students that attend Alcorn do great things. Alcorn is a focal point of tradition, culture, and Black excellence within this country. HBCUs have always been at the forefront of change, and now, the acknowledgment that each is receiving displays appreciation. My peers and I are the torch-barriers of our predecessors who fought for us to have a seat at the table. We are reaping the benefits of the strides made to get us here,” said Walker.
