Alcorn State University named to Newsweek’s “America’s Top Online Colleges 2022”
Alcorn State University is one of two Mississippi schools recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in online education, according to Newsweek.
Alcorn State follows UCLA, Syracuse, and Penn State, and is the highest-ranked HBCU in the survey. In addition, the university is one of 75 high-profile colleges and universities on Newsweek’s “America’s Top Online Colleges” list to earn a five-star rating—the list’s highest honor.

As more students pursue online educational choices, this is the first time Newsweek, in partnership with Statista Inc., a global market research and consumer data firm, has recognized colleges and universities providing online learning
America’s Top Online Colleges 2022 highlights the nation’s top colleges with online degrees based on an online survey with over 12,000 assessments from more than 9,000 respondents that participated in online college degree programs and/or general online learning courses in the United States.
Respondents shared their experiences by rating the institutions regarding several criteria: organization and accessibility, support and service, cost of program, perceived organizational reputation, expected success and practical relevance of contents. Finally, respondents could indicate how satisfied they were with the organization and to what extent they would recommend it to others. User reviews and additional institutional indicators were transformed into score values and aggregated toward a final score.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, of the nearly 4,000 degree-granting academic institutions in the U.S., most colleges (79 percent) offer either standalone online courses or entire degree programs. Almost all public four- and two-year colleges (96 and 97 percent, respectively) offer online courses or programs.
