Alcorn’s Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society donate items during annual Clothing and Food Drive
For the last two months, a student organization in Alcorn State University’s Department of Biological Sciences collected items for the less fortunate.
The Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society hosted its annual Clothing and Food Drive Friday, Nov. 20, at the Math & Science Building. Faculty and students donated clothing and non-perishable items to the River City Rescue Mission in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The donations were collected in October and November.
Co-advisors Drs. Jameka Grigsby and Shavonda Jackson of the Department of Biological Sciences collected over 1,000 items of clothing and over three dozen boxes of non-perishable items donated by Alcorn’s students, faculty, and staff.
Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society is a general scholarship honor society open to junior, senior, and graduate students in all academic disciplines. This national honor society has more than 75,000 academically gifted and talented men and women committed to pursuing knowledge, developing a trained intellect, dream better dreams, and providing leadership and service to others.
Grigsby praised the students for their charitable effort.
“We commend our students, faculty, and staff for taking such an active part in both initiatives,” said Grigsby. “All donations are greatly appreciated. Those items collected will help many families and individuals that might need them, especially in this challenging time.”
Jackson said that the organization is growing at a rapid pace. She looks forward to the organization’s continued progress.
“I’m proud to say that our Honor Society is beginning to blossom, with us having an interest meeting involving over 100 students, said Jackson. “Prospective students are currently submitting application packets, and we plan to induct new members in February 2021.
We are also in the planning phase of hosting events for the spring semester.”
