Alcorn’s Metro-Jackson Alumni Chapter gears up for the 50 Under 50 Alcornites ceremony

A celebration of Alcorn State University alumni who are thriving professionally is in the works for later this year.

The Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter is currently accepting applications for the inaugural 50 Under 50 Alcornites Ceremony that will be held in Jackson, Mississippi in August. The 50 Under 50 Alcornites, which is sponsored by the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter, recognizes Alcorn graduates ages 50 and under for demonstrating professional excellence and a commitment to the University and their community.

Alumni who are interested in participating in the application process must be age 50 or younger by Dec. 31, 2018, be a paid member of the National Alumni Association and a local alumni chapter at the time of the application submission. Applicants must also demonstrate professional excellence in their field, show commitment to the University and their hometown or current residential community. If selected, the applicant must be able to raise a minimum of $1, 871 for the ASU Foundation, Inc.

Items for submission include a completed application, resume, three one-page support letters and a professional photograph. Smartphone pictures will not be accepted. Items must be submitted by Thursday, March 1.

Dr. Mitchell Shears, who graduated from Alcorn in 1999 and led the charge on the event’s inception, believes the event is the perfect opportunity to spotlight successful alumni while soliciting financial support for the University.

“One of the goals of the Chapter is to raise funds for the University,” said Shears. “We were challenged to design an event to honor younger Alcornites and encourage them to become more active in chapters and to give back to the University.”

The 50 Under 50 Alcornites, along with the date, time and location of the ceremony, will be announced Friday, March 30. For more information about the ceremony and how to access applications, contact Shears at [email protected].
