Department of Human Sciences host Career and Counsel Session

On Tuesday, April 17, the Department of Human Sciences hosted their 2018 Spring Career and Counsel Session at the Eunice Powell Hall Building moderated by Priscilla Houston. Dr. Keith McGee, associate dean for Research and Administration, delivered greetings on behalf of the dean and himself from the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

The department is honored to have had Rep. Alyce G. Clarke, Mississippi House of Representatives District 69, as the keynote speaker. Rep. Clarke engaged the audience as she shared her recollections of the past, her academic training at Alcorn State University and her professional journey to the state senate.

Clarke shared the sentiment that her mother gave her at the time she was considering to enter into public service. She stated, "My mother told me this," "You will not know it if you do not try it. So do not say no until you try it."

As a special invitee, Dr. Earline Strickland, retired chair, and professor for the Department of Human Sciences shared about the history of the department and accomplishments during her tenure. She gave students sound advice on career choices and encouraged other departmental representatives to extend their support to the Department for interdisciplinary endeavors.

After that was a panel discussion facilitated by Dr. Martha Ravola, with panelists representing disciplines in nutrition, child development, extension, food science and military science. Strickland, Cinda Catchings, Dr. Edith Ezekwe, Ouida Pittman, Lt.Col. Andrell Hardy and Anthony Reed served as panelists and shared valuable career-related information with the students.

According to Ravola, this event will remain memorable. Ravola mentioned, "We intend to build on the past and press forward. She added, "The Department of Human Sciences, earlier known as Department of Home Economics was the first department to receive accreditation by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences" at Alcorn State University.
