Dr. Siddig Fageir named chair of Alcorn’s Department of Social Sciences
Dr. Siddig Fageir has been appointed as the new chair of the Department of Social Sciences at Alcorn State University. He also serves as an assistant professor in the department.
Fageir has over 20 years of teaching experience in sociology, criminal justice, economics, urban studies and planning, statistics, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His sole and co-authorship scholarly work includes over 40 published articles, books, chapters, and a textbook.
“I am pleased to welcome Dr. Siddig Fageir as chair for the Department of Social Sciences,” said Dr. Babu Patlolla, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. He brings extensive experience and expertise in the area and has innovative ideas to move the department forward.
He earned a Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from Jackson State University, a master’s degree in economics from the University of Toledo, a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Iowa, and associate degrees in pre-business and pre-engineering from Kirkwood Community College. He has completed his coursework in the sociology doctoral program at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Receiving the promotion is an honor for Fageir.
“It feels wonderful being a member of the Alcorn family,” said Fageir. “I am honored to be here and will work hard to promote the Department of Social Sciences and the University locally, nationally, and internationally.”
A goal for Fageir is to drive the department to the forefront of sociology studies.
“I am looking forward to using my experience in academia as a faculty, researcher, and administration to help the Department grow and flourish and further elevate the University’s fine reputation.”
Fageir has various goals that he hopes to accomplish in his new position.
“I hope to improve recruitment by adding unique, modern, and attractive academic degree programs. I also want to improve student success through retention and graduation by providing high-quality education and interactive and engaging advising. Another goal is to provide quality academic support for our students through internships to improve their chances for successful careers.”
