Jerome Myles Sr. wins 2021 Statewide Gospel Announcer Award during virtual Gospel Music Awards
A staple at Alcorn State University’s WPRL 91.7 FM continues to garner attention and success for producing quality radio content.
Jerome Myles Sr., music/program director for WPRL, recently won the 2021 Statewide Gospel Announcer Award during the 43rd annual All Virtual Mississippi Gospel Music Awards Sunday, Aug. 1.
Accepting this year’s award was emotional for Myles. His colleague and spiritual advisor Pastor Queen Jackson, who hosted a radio show on WTYJ 97.7 FM in Natchez, Mississippi, recently passed away. Myles dedicated his winnings to his dear friend.
“Winning this year’s award was bittersweet because of my spiritual mother’s passing,” said Myles. “She was my spiritual mother for over 30 years. I truly thank God for this awesome award. Although she’s not here to celebrate with me, I dedicate my award to her. She will be missed.”
Commitment to the craft is vital for Myles. The award is a testament to the hours of hard work he gives to radio broadcasting.
“This award means everything. Hard work pays off, and I can add this award to my trophy case because of the dedication I’ve put into honing my craft. I have been blessed to compete against some of the best radio announcers in Mississippi. That alone speaks volumes.”
Representing Alcorn brings joy to Myles. He’s proud of the platform that the University has given him because it allows him to showcase his abilities while teaching mass communication students the ins and outs of radio.
“It feels great to represent the beautiful campus of Alcorn State University. This award motivates me to work harder and continue to give back to the many students that I am fortunate to train. The hands-on training gives mass communication students an opportunity to learn skills required to become radio personalities. This is rewarding in so many ways.”
Myles is grateful to still receive accolades for his work after being in radio for over four decades.
“Words cannot explain how I feel to be thriving in radio for 40 plus years. I truly love it.”
