Latoyia Smith promoted to retention specialist for the Office of Academic Affairs

An Alcorn State University alumna who formerly served as an administrative assistant in the Office of the Registrar has been promoted to a new position.

LaToyia Smith is the new retention specialist for the Office of Academic Affairs. Her role consists of gathering data and seeking ways to increase retention rates at the University. She's also responsible for coordinating and implementing activities, initiatives, and programs that will provide services to improve the effectiveness of institutional retention, completion, and graduation.

Smith is grateful to be put in a position that allows her to help others.

"I am ecstatic as well as humble," said Smith. "I desire to flourish wherever God places me."

Connecting with the students will play a significant role in Smith's new position. She plans to use her opportunity to guide students to their ultimate goal of attaining a college degree.

"I plan to motivate students to finish their education by mentoring, support, and reminding them that what their future holds begins with today's decisions."

Because of its family-oriented atmosphere, Smith encourages others outside of her department to motivate students to continue their pursuit of a quality college education from Alcorn.

"It is incumbent upon us to encourage our students to continue their education here at Alcorn because of the campus community's family culture. We provide comfort, and gain a conducive rapport with our students so they may be successful in their educational progress and future career endeavors."
