New Alumni Hall of Honor display will showcase prominent Alcornites in Belle Lettres Hall
Over its storied history, Alcorn State University has produced many successful alumni who have also made significant contributions to the institution. The accomplishments of these esteemed alums are now showcased in a new recognition landmark on the Lorman Campus.
The Rededication and Grand Opening of The Alumni Hall of Honor was held Thursday, Oct. 10, at Belle Lettres Hall. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni now have a place on campus to learn more about the Alcornites that have helped to pave the way for the university’s progress.
Several Hall of Honor inductees were in attendance for the event. Inductee Zelmarine Murphy ’66, historian for the Alcorn National Alumni Association, reflected on the history associated with those highlighted in the building. She motivated the audience of Alcornites to encourage the younger generation to attend the institution that molded them.
“We acknowledge the contributions that Alconites have made across the world,” said Murphy. “If you are an Alcornite, you don’t have to toot your horn because we see the work you are doing. Observe the names in this building because these honorees have done great things for the university and community. We hope that this building stands forever so others can see the impact of Alcorn State University. Alcorn is a school that you should want your children and grandchildren to attend so they can see the greatness that comes from this university.”
Inductees on hand for the program expressed their gratitude to Alcorn for providing them with a strong personal foundation. Percy Norwood, a 2006 inductee, spoke to the exceptional level of talent that the university has produced in multiple professional realms.
“Institutions are judged by the product they produce, which is alumni,” said Norwood. “As a product of this institution, I assure you that Alcorn alumni have performed at the highest level in government, academics, education, and philanthropy throughout the nation and the world. Alcorn’s alumni have excelled at every turn on their journey. Alcorn took a little country boy like me and gave me a quality education that is second to none.”
The Southwest Mississippi Center for Culture & Learning, also housed in Belle Lettres, has played a big role in the formation of the Hall of Honor. Teresa Busby, executive director for the Center, said that she’s happy to see the university pursue this venture.
“I can't express enough how pleased I am to be a part of the development here at Alcorn,” said Busby. “I know that the inductees will be proud of the new look for the hall of honor. Our maintenance team did a wonderful job of bringing this building back to glory.”
President Dr. Felecia M. Nave closed by thanking the alumni for continuing to champion their alma mater.
“This is a proud moment in our university’s history,” said Nave. “The Hall of Honor holds great meaning for those who hold this university near and dear to their hearts. We are proud of the hall of honor inductees because this is a testament to the great education and experiences you received at Alcorn, which makes this event more notable. Thank you for remaining committed to your alma mater and exemplifying that true Brave spirit of excellence.”
