RaShunda Veals completes internship with WJTV 12 News
A journalism student from Alcorn State University made strides toward perfecting her craft as a reporter.
RaShunda Veals, a junior mass communications major recently completed a summer internship at WJTV 12 News. WJTV (CBS affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi) serves the Central Mississippi community with their broadcasts of local news, local weather, local sports, and the top rated programs of CBS.
Being an intern exposed Veals to the professional side of journalism. She’s grateful for the chance to build relationships with seasoned journalists while adding to her skillset.
“My internship experience at WJTV was an enlightening opportunity,” said Veals. “I was able to network with professionals while learning essential information about the broadcast journalism industry. I shadowed many producers and reporters to learn the necessary skills and components that help create a successful newscast.”
WJTV was one of Veals’ top choices to intern because she grew up watching the station’s broadcast with her family. A fellow Alcorn graduate who shared the spotlight on the station also inspired her to follow the same path.
“I was eager to gain exposure at WJTV because my family watches its broadcast and it’s close to home. Also, former Alcornite, Brittney Noble Jones was a news anchor there.”
Veals appreciates everything she’s learned in the Department of Mass Communications at Alcorn. She credits them for preparing her for the internship.
“The knowledge I’ve gained the past two years was definitely useful. I was aware of the terminology they used in the newsroom. The background knowledge I have from my classes allowed me to successfully navigate throughout the newsroom.”
