Students attend annual campus Career Fair in search of job and internship opportunities
The James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom at Alcorn State University was filled with students eager to secure job and internship opportunities with some of America’s biggest companies.
The Office of Career Services hosted its annual Career Fair for students to network with different companies. About 30 companies and organizations participated in this year’s event.
The fair provided students with exposure and insights into multiple career paths and employment options. Kendontre Brown, a junior majoring in animal science, left the event with interest in careers outside of his field of study.
“The event opened my eyes to the possibility of pursuing a career in another field,” said Brown. “As an animal science major, I was open to becoming a veterinarian or something within the animal science field. But coming to this event showed me that I could do more with my education.”
Ciera Promprakai, a senior political science major, agreed with Brown, stating how the career fair lived up to its purpose of exposing students to new opportunities.
“I was given lots of valuable information that will allow me to expand my horizons,” said Promprakai. “This gave me an idea of what other careers are available besides the field I planned to pursue.”
International students attending the event received valuable information on companies that have a global presence. Emmanuel Arthur, a sophomore computer science major from Ghana, was excited to network with professionals and gain perspective on what to expect from the corporate world.
“As an international student, this event gives me a chance to see what companies are hiring in this country,” said Arthur. “I’m excited about the opportunity to find a job after I graduate.”
Ryki Vance, a senior majoring in chemistry, hoped to find internships that would prepare her for her career after she graduates next spring.
“My goal was to find internship opportunities since I’ll be graduating in May 2020,” said Vance. “This is the perfect event to explore possible summer internships before starting graduate school next fall.”
The event ended on a high note for Felecia Pittman, director for the Office of Career Services. Professionals representing the participating companies commended the students on their professional awareness and preparedness. Pittman was proud of the students’ demeanor and passion for networking.
“I received a lot of good feedback from the companies about the professionalism of our students,” said Pittman. “They participated with enthusiasm, and the representatives from the visiting companies were impressed with them. The event came together quite nicely.”
