Woodrow Price honored at the NEA Foundation’s Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D. C.
The teaching career of one Alcorn State University alumnus continues to garner attention from his peers in the educational field.
Woodrow Price, who earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education in 2007 and 2009, was one of 46 public school educators from across the country to be honored with The California Casualty Award for Teaching Excellence at the NEA Foundation’s Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in Washington, D. C. in February.
The California Casualty Awards for Teaching Excellence awardees are nominated by their peers for their dedication to the profession, community engagement, professional development, attention to diversity, and advocacy for fellow educators. The NEA Foundation offers funding and other resources to public school educators, their schools, and districts to solve complex teaching and learning challenges.
Being in the room with other standout educators made Price appreciate the moment in his career.
“Being one of three African-Americans to receive the award brought joy to my heart,” said Price. “I found joy being in the presence of other distinguished educators and friends in public education.”
Representing the state at the event was a proud moment for Price. It confirms his belief that teaching is his God-given gift. The moment motivates him to strive for more in the future.
“I look at teaching as a ministry. The invitation served as validation that I am where God wants me to be. Although I’m at a significant point in my career, I still haven’t reached my peak. I have a lot of work to do.”
The award is a result of Price’s commitment to educating the young generation. The recognition, along with the testimonies of his students, drives him to keep up the good work.
“Teaching is a difficult, but rewarding career. It motivates me when my students show their appreciation and express their thanks to me for my effort in the classroom.”
