Alcorn honored to host 2018 SWAC Football Championship Game

Hosting the upcoming 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Toyota Football Championship Game on Sat., Dec. 1 at 3:30 p.m. is an incredible reward for Braves Football and a historic opportunity for the Alcorn State University campus and greater Brave Nation to continually demonstrate Alcorn excellence in all we do.

Two important factors are at the forefront in organizing this recently announced arrangement – Alcorn is the host institution and the SWAC is the coordinating body. Each entity has specific responsibilities in this regard and have been effectively working together, within a short period of time, to successfully deliver on this first-in-history event.

Hosting the football championship represents an unwavering recognition and confidence from the conference in Alcorn’s game day operations. In accordance with SWAC policies, procedures and practices, Alcorn takes this responsibility seriously and is committed to providing the most positive experience possible for fans attending the title game.

Dr. Charles McClelland, Jr., SWAC Commissioner, spoke about how encouraged he is about working with the work of Alcorn’s leaders on the game thus far and his objective of helping to return as much revenue as possible to member institutions.

“Upon winning the SWAC East Division last Saturday, Alcorn State University earned the right to host the 2018 Toyota SWAC Football Championship game,” said SWAC Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland.

“Make no mistake, this is a SWAC event hosted at Alcorn. The conference office staff has proactively been in contact and working closely with Alcorn officials on a daily basis to ensure compliance with conference standards and expectation for the championship game.”

“I am confident Alcorn is taking this unique opportunity to serve as great hosts all while sustaining their rich game day atmosphere and helping to boost overall attendance for a premier, nationally-televised attraction on their campus. I thank President Lee and his staff for all the tremendous hard work and planning they are putting into hosting the game.”

Dr. Donzell Lee, interim president of Alcorn State University welcomed Commissioner McClelland’s comments and added insights into the University’s role in planning and hosting the conference football championship.

“Alcorn is thankful and honored to work with the conference office in hosting the SWAC’s 2018 football championship game. From the onset of the probability of hosting the game, Alcorn has been working hard to balance our approach and conform to SWAC standards and practices of previous football championship games. While we are just the host location and not the coordinator of the event, we completely understand the tremendous financial responsibility and obligations we must fulfill for this post-season event.

Lee added, “We want to remind everyone that SWAC championship game policy requires all persons attending the event to possess a ticket. Our game day operations team has proposed and the conference office has approved the ticket pricing for the game.”
