Alcorn ranked a top-10 HBCU in the nation by College Consensus
With its latest top-10 ranking, Alcorn State University continues to receive praise as one of the best Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the nation.
The University is ranked number six on College Consensus’ Top 50 Best Historically Black Colleges & Universities list for 2020. College Consensus pulls together data from numerous college ranking sites, including U.S. News & World Report, WalletHub, The Wall Street Journal, and others.
Tracy Cook, vice president for the Division of Student Affairs, credits the Alcorn community’s commitment to excellence and for enhancing the experiences of students on campus.
“This ranking is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that our faculty and staff puts toward preparing our students to excel,” said Cook. “Alcorn prides itself on providing an ideal environment for living, placement, learning, and forming bonds that will be cherished forever.”
Alcorn is highly regarded by graduates for the support the University provides for their futures. Because of professional resources on campus, students leave the University prepared to thrive in their respective fields.
“Alcorn’s Office of Career Services helped me put together a resume for my law school admissions packet,” said Lois Winn, who graduated in May and is headed to law school this fall. “They also helped me create a professional LinkedIn page so I could connect with law schools I was applying to.”
Students love the close-knit atmosphere that Alcorn offers. The family element allows students to form relationships that will continue for a lifetime. These bonds play a significant role in enhancing their Alcorn experience.
“I chose to further my education at Alcorn because of the family-oriented community,” said Ariyana Davis, a Chicago, Illinois native that will begin her senior year this fall.
Alcorn alumni care about the financial well-being of the students, so much so that many of them support the University by donating funds to provide scholarships. Vivian Smith, a scientific researcher at Battelle Memorial Institute in Ohio who graduated from Alcorn in 2008, established the P.A.S.S. (Passion + Assertiveness = Successful Scholars) Scholarship with the ASU Foundation, Inc.
Students that maintain a 3.2 GPA, a score of 21 on the ACT, or 1080 on the SAT are eligible for the scholarship. The scholarship is geared toward students majoring in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, education, or nursing. The recipient must be a Mississippi resident.
“When I was a student at Alcorn, I promised myself that I would give back to the beautiful HBCU that taught me so much and enriched my life in so many ways,” said Smith. “It is crucial for alumni to give back and support the next generation of Alcornites.”
Alcorn is a nationally ranked institution for its quality education and affordability. Over the past several years, the University has earned multiple accolades on the U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings in the Top Public Schools Regional South, Best Regional Universities South, Best Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Top Performers on Social Mobility South categories.
Not only can students get an outstanding education from Alcorn, but also, they can earn their degrees at an affordable price. In 2015, Alcorn eliminated out-of-state tuition fees for non-resident students and began offering a flat tuition rate for all resident and non-resident students.
Alcorn has an abundance of new and exciting programs of study that prepares students for promising futures. Some of those programs include Alcorn’s first-ever Doctor of Nursing Practice program and a master’s degree in NCAA compliance and academic progress rate reporting, and a post-baccalaureate certificate program in NCAA compliance and academic progress reporting.
The University also offers the Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) degree, which includes concentrations in criminal justice, English and literature, history, mass communications, music, and political science.
