Application period opens for Alcorn’s AgDiscovery Summer Camp
The Alcorn State University School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences has opened the application period for its 2019 AgDiscovery Summer Camp. Students, grades 7-10, who are interested in careers in the areas of animal science or veterinary medicine, are encouraged to apply.
According to Dr. Cassandra Vaughn, assistant professor of animal science, “The AgDiscovery Program began in 2002 through the United States Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Inspection Service, and Veterinary Services/Civil Rights grant in the amount of $12,000. It has since become a premier program within the United States Department of Agriculture.”
The AgDiscovery Summer Camp is based on the premise of the former Ag Academy Camp, a concept created in 1999 by Vaughn, Dr. Kenneth Stallings, professor of animal science, and Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, associate professor of plant and soil science. The programs were designed to entice youth towards careers in agriculture.
This year, 22 institutions will participate in AgDiscovery, with camps focused on various topics, including marine biology, animal welfare, agriculture economics and more! The 2-week camp is free and is scheduled to be held at Alcorn’s Lorman campus June 16-28.
To attend, applications must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 1, 2019. The process is highly competitive, with a maximum of 16 slots available per university.
