Candace Morgan Bolton named Biloxi Public School District's Teacher of the Year
An Alcorn State University alumna is being spotlighted for being a significant figure in the Biloxi Public School District.
Candace Morgan Bolton, a fourth-grade teacher at Gorenflo Elementary, was named the school's Teacher of the Year Thursday, May 10. Bolton, who earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education in 2011, appreciates the school district for recognizing her dedication to her students' learning.
"Being awarded was a total shock for me," said Bolton. "I make sure to give my all to my students without expecting anything in return. I try my best to make sure that I give my students a great fourth-grade year to ensure their success in the future."
One method Bolton uses to encourage her students is to outline her expectations for them during the school year. Bolton then commits to equipping the students to achieve high marks in the classroom and beyond.
"I have always had high expectations for my students, and I strive to prepare them not only to understand and meet my expectations but also to exceed them.
The youth and coming to the aid of others are two of Bolton's passions. Combining the two to have a great career was her inspiration for becoming a teacher.
"My love for children and drive for helping others inspired me to become an educator. What better way to combine two of my passions than to become an educator? I enjoy reaching struggling students the most because if I can reach them, then that would assure that I'm doing a good job at being an educator."
Aside from teaching, Bolton is pursuing a doctorate in educational administration from Belhaven University. Her goal is to become a college professor and a principal.
