Center for Conservation Research to Host Training Workshop

The Alcorn State University Center for Conservation Research will host a Clonal Propagation Training workshop Thursday, June 14 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Buses will depart from the Ecology and Natural Resources Building to the Conservation Research site at 8:45 a.m.

The workshop, which began in 2001 and takes place annually, concentrates on the philosophies and methodologies applied to conservation research on horticultural crops. This year’s workshop will focus on: Clonal Propagation of Muscadine; Organic Production of Turmeric; Increasing Vitamin-C and Anthocyanins in Blueberries by organic methods; and No-till Vegetable Production.

According to Dr. Girish K. Panicker, director, Center for Conservation Research, “Clonal propagation is used to produce large plants in a short amount of time. This technique is applied to produce a plant identical in genotype with its mother plant. Its primary economic benefit for most species is the high value placed on vegetatively propagated cultivars.” 

This practical training will help farmers to establish organic vineyards and nurseries by effectively utilizing a limited number of mother plants.  Registration is free and open to the public. Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.
