Department of Human Sciences hosts Career and Counseling Session

The Department of Human Sciences recently hosted its spring Career and Counsel Session for students in the child development, food nutrition, and community health sciences programs.

According to Dr. Martha Ravola, interim chair and associate professor, Department of Human Sciences, "It is our sincere endeavor to prepare students who are career ready. For graduating seniors, we want them to know about potential careers in the field and for students who are yet to graduate, to be career focused so that they can plan their field placements."

During the session, students learned about specific careers, career preparation, and field experiences through a panel of subject area experts, potential employers, and administrators.

Dr. Joey Mitchell, director of Career Services, Alcorn State University, provided students with career advice regarding resume building, internships, and research opportunities. Michael Trusclair, USDA 1890 Program Liaison, offered expertise on opportunities with the USDA. He encouraged students to follow their passion, maintain a good attitude, and to keep their personal and professional lives separate.

Dee Thomas-Jones and Shawana Ramsey, victim advocates from the Natchez Children's Service, offered information and answered questions about child advocacy. Janie Leach, instructor, Child Development, was present to speak about career options in Early Childhood Education.

Asia Thomas, senior child development major, stated, "This was a good inspirational session. I feel encouraged and inspired. It was well-needed for those of us who are graduating, especially at the end of the school year. I feel motivated to keep on pushing."

The session closed with a message to the graduates and remarks from LaTasha Colemen, interim practicum/tutoring services coordinator. She thanked those who attended and the speakers who contributed.
