Driven by faith and ambition, RaShunda Veals, continues her rise in journalism with selection as one of two recipients of the 2019 College Public Relations Association of Mississippi Scholarship
An Alcorn State University student who aspires to be a journalist recently earned a scholarship for her high marks in class and her dedication to the field.
RaShunda Veals, a senior mass communications major from Centreville, Mississippi, was awarded the 2019 College Public Relations Association of Mississippi (CPRAM) Scholarship Tuesday, May 21 during the annual CPRAM Conference at Holmes Community College in Ridgeland, Mississippi.
The scholarship will go towards academic necessities such as books and other school supplies in Veals’ upcoming senior year. She's happy with the result of her commitment.
"I am elated to be a CPRAM Scholarship recipient," said Veals. "The scholarship funds will help me financially throughout my upcoming senior year at Alcorn."
The $1,000 CPRAM Scholarship is awarded to full-time students in good standing that are majoring in public relations, communications, journalism, advertising, mass communications, political communications, crisis management, graphic design, or other communication-oriented programs. The scholarship could be awarded to a student entering or enrolled at a Mississippi two-year or four-year college.
Veals' journey in journalism has gotten off to a great start. With her part-time job as a communications specialist at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant in Port Gibson, Mississippi, work-study as a student writer in the Department of Agriculture's Office of Marketing and Communications, and internship at WJTV 12, Veals is on the fast track to success.
With all of the knowledge she's acquired, she's still hungry for more.
"I have been able to explore the field of journalism in many aspects since I've been at Alcorn. Besides learning essential knowledge from my professors, I have had the opportunity to network with professionals worldwide through internships and job opportunities. I am open and willing to learn any new skills that would help me in the future."
The 2018-2019 semester was filled with responsibilities and activities for Veals. On campus, she juggled being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and becoming a President's Scholar.
Her drive and faith helped her to balance the happenings of her junior year effortlessly.
"My daily motivation is my family and my ambition to pursue every goal that I have set. I was able to balance tasks that included clubs, jobs, class assignments with prioritization and prayer."
With her senior year approaching, Veals has her mind on repeating the steps that have led to her success thus far.
"I am looking forward to having a productive and safe school year. I will work hard just as I did in previous years to ensure success."
