Grammy winner Dee Dee Bridgewater to headline Alcorn’s 39th annual Jazz Festival in Vicksburg

Alcorn State University’s Department of Fine Arts is gearing up for its annual musical showcase.

The 39th Alcorn State University Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, April 13 at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi. This year’s featured guest is Dee Dee Bridgewater and the Jazz Trio.

Over the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades, Grammy and Tony Award-winning Jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on standards, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics.  Ever the fearless voyager, explorer, pioneer and keeper of tradition, the three-time Grammy-winner most recently won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album for Eleanora Fagan (1915-1959): To Billie With Love From Dee Dee.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will also feature university, college, and high school jazz ensembles from around the country from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the performances, a music workshop with Dee Dee Bridgewater is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. Bridgewater and her band will take the stage for an evening concert at 7 p.m.

The annual Alcorn State University Jazz Festival is a masterpiece rich in tradition and talent. Jazz masters like Clark Terry, Max Roach, Slide Hampton, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Louie Bellson, Donald Byrd, Ramsey Lewis, Stanley Turrentine, McCoy Tyner, Arturo Sandoval, and Branford Marsalis have graced the stage of this free event throughout its history, establishing the Alcorn Jazz Festival as a true gem and premier jazz event in the region.
