J. D. Boyd Library to celebrate years of being a federal depository library
Alcorn State University's J.D. Boyd Library invites students, faculty and staff to celebrate 48 Years of Services as a Federal Depository Library. The purpose of the event is to give awareness of the government documents that are located in the library. This event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21 with a 9 a.m. meet and greet, followed by a guest speaker presentation by Mr. Herbert Jackson, chief academic officer for the Government Publishing Office in Washington, D.C.
The university repository was founded under the direction of former director of libraries Dr. Epsy Hendricks in 1970, and continued under the leadership of former dean of libraries, Mrs. Jessie Arnold. Students can access and view government documents, tax forms and other publications inside the library.
“We want students to learn from the free documents we have here in the library,” said Dr. Blanche Sanders, dean of University Libraries. “Here in the library, we have journals, government publications, civil rights documents and much more. We want students to learn about the benefits of the documents that are available to them.”
The Government Documents Department is located on the main floor of the J.D. Boyd Library. The documents are housed in open stacks and available to patrons during all hours that the library is open. Patrons needing assistance after 5 p.m. and on weekends should check with the reference librarian on duty at the reference desk.
The J.D. Boyd Library has served as a depository in the 2nd Congressional District since 1970. The Documents Department is responsible for maintaining a representative collection of federal and state Documents.
