Malcolm Smith conquers being a double major to earn a bachelor’s degree
One Alcorn State University soon-to-be graduate looks forward to using his knowledge to protect the country from cybercriminals.
Malcolm Smith, a double major in computer networking and information technology and homeland security, will earn a bachelor's degree Saturday during Alcorn's 2018 Fall Commencement.
Initially, Smith only planned to major in computer networking and information technology. A discussion with one of the Department's professors about studying homeland security motivated Smith to pursue that field along with his other major.
"At first, I only chose computer networking and information technology as my major," said Smith, a Memphis, Tennessee native. "I met a teacher named Dr. Sam Nwaneri, and he introduced me to the homeland security program. At that moment, I knew I wanted to pursue both fields. With both majors, I would love to help protect America from cybercrime."
Throughout his education, Smith has taken advantage of the opportunities presented to him at Alcorn. His internships with the Mississippi Attorney General's Office in Jackson, Mississippi and the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Mississippi taught him valuable lessons that he applies to his daily routine. The internships also taught him how to be a more effective team player and the importance of being meticulous.
"At the Mississippi Attorney General's Office, I met many amazing people, and they have taught me things that I incorporate in my day-to-day life. Working at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station taught me the value of teamwork and taking the time to review the work I have done."
By participating in the internships, Smith was able to get a feel for what he could expect once he starts his career. The hands-on preparation that he experienced gives him confidence in his ability to not only land a great career but also to thrive.
"I would love to work for any government agency because it will give me a chance to showcase everything that I have learned at Alcorn."
Now that Smith is preparing to wrap up his college journey, he reflects on the relationships he's built with his fellow Alcornites. He appreciates the time they spent together and looks forward to sharing the milestone of graduation.
"It has been a pleasure to be a student here. I have made lots of friends, and we have all taken steps to move forward as a family. Graduating is a wonderful experience. It will be memorable."
