Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter sets date for Leading Alcornites Under 50 ceremony

Esteemed Alcorn State University alumni will be recognized for their commitment to uplifting their communities later this year.

The Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter, Inc. will host the Leading Alcornites Under 50 ceremony Saturday, Aug. 25 from 6-11 p.m. at Fairview Inn, located at 734 Fairview St. in Jackson, Mississippi. Fourteen Alcornites under the age of 50 will be honored for making great strides in their community, career and who have encouraged others to attend the University. Those selected will raise funds to provide scholarships for deserving Alcorn students. Tickets for the ceremony are $50.

Dr. Sebrina Palmer, lead school improvement coach for the Mississippi Department of Education/University of Mississippi, is excited to connect with fellow Alcornites while planning means of raising funds for future Alcorn students.

"Beneath the shade of giant trees is where my journey began," said Brown, who also served as the 1997-1998 Miss Alcorn State University. "The preparation I received at Alcorn was excellent and has propelled me to some of the greatest opportunities and accomplishments in my career. I am excited to have been selected as a 2018 Leading Alcornite Under 50. I look forward to engaging with my Alcorn family as we work together to fund scholarships for prospective students."

Justin Mathis, president, and CEO of the Mathis Foundation is proud to be amongst fellow leaders who are making a difference in their communities.

"To be recognized by my fellow alumni for my dedication to diversity, community outreach, and college access is very special," said Mathis. "It is humbling to be recognized by many leaders of their profession. Thank you for all you do and have done, for all of us."

Dr. Mitchell Shears, chair of the Leading Alcornites Under 50 ceremony, feels proud to lead the charge on spotlighting successful alumni.

"Being able to honor Alcornites who are ages 50 and under show that we have younger professionals who are on an upward trajectory to professional excellence," said Shears. "The honorees are impacting lives daily not only in Mississippi but all parts of the world. It is our goal to continue to highlight outstanding alumni who are paying it forward, as well as, raise funds to assist the University with providing scholarships to deserving scholars."
