Office of Global Programs to host annual Multicultural Festival
The Office of Global Programs will host its 12th annual Multicultural Day Thursday, April 11. The all-day event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with an educational workshop, followed by the international flag parade at 12:45 p.m., and will conclude with the Multicultural Festival from 1-4 p.m. Both the workshop and festival will be held in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom.
The theme for this year’s event is “A Celebration of Global Cultures.” The purpose is to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism at Alcorn State University.
“The festival is an annual venue that allows the entire university community to learn about the many countries and cultures represented at the university,” said Dr. Dovi Alipoe, director, Office of Global Programs. “It is a learning venue for domestic students, international students as well as the communities adjacent to the university.”
The festival will focus on American Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and Afro-Cuban Jazz and its influence on the culture and history of Cuba. The emphasis on American civil rights will allow international students to learn about that aspect of American History through Jazz as well as showcase their own countries of origin.
The featured guest will be Mr. Galen Abdur-Razzaq of Flute Juice Productions, a musical entertainment company based out of Orlando, Florida. The company is known for providing music, entertainment, and lectures to colleges and universities around the world.
The festival will also feature presentations and displays, an international food tasting session, and faculty, staff, and students ‘strutting their stuff’ in an international fashion show.
