School of Education and Psychology faculty, students attend the Educator HBCU’s & E3 Conference 2019
Drs. Tabitha Smith and Felicia McGowan from Alcorn State University’s School of Education and Psychology attended The Educator Exchange: HBCUs & E3 Conference Jan. 24 and 25 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Along with them were Ciera Horton and Kontessa McClendon, both elementary education majors.
Attending the conference was an opportunity for the students to network and engage with professionals in the educational field. The conference brought together many students majoring in education from different historically black colleges and universities across the country.
The focus of the conference was to provide professors, students, Pre-Kindergarten-12th-grade teachers, and administrators from various school districts, and universities with the opportunity to discuss the need for minority educators in the classroom. The conference presentations and panel speakers expressed the rewarding benefits of becoming diverse professionals.
The students gained valuable information at the conference. It was both Horton and McClendon's first time attending the conference. McClendon was very pleased with her experience.
“I gained a lot of knowledge from the conference. It made me realize that I really want to be a teacher and have an impact on a child's life. It was the best experience I've ever had,” said McClendon.
“I learned about the different HBCUs and the benefits for me as an African-American educator. I can provide knowledge while helping students who come from a challenging upbringing and troubled homes to have success in the classroom,” said Ciera.
