Senior Laronda Wilson earns the National Association of Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Title III Administrators, Inc. Scholarship

Thanks to a new scholarship, a senior at Alcorn State University can focus on finishing her final year without finances being a distraction.

Laronda Wilson, a health physics/radiation major, was awarded the 2019 National Association of Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Title III Administrators, Inc. (NAHBCU-Title III) Scholarship for $1,000. Alcorn received one of 18 awards granted by the NAHBCU-Title III.

NAHBCU-Title III is an organization focused on encouraging and facilitating an open dialogue among Title III eligible Schools as they work together to quantify the legislative intent of Title III program legislation thereby strengthening the resource development capacity of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in order to move them into the mainstream of American Higher Education. Federal Title III funding provides financial assistance to HBCUs to establish or strengthen their physical plants, financial management, academic resources, and endowment building capacity.

“Winning this scholarship was an exhilarating experience,” said Wilson. “This accomplishment would not have been possible without faith and determination.”

The award will play an integral role in Wilson’s ability to purchase necessities throughout her education.

“Such a valuable resource will greatly aid the remainder of my education by covering tuition costs and other expenses. So many students are distracted because of financial burdens, so it is a blessing to finally have a means of covering educational costs so I can perform at a high level.”

Wilson encourages her peers to search for scholarships that will lighten or eliminate the financial strain put on students.

“I encourage other students to apply for scholarships and work closely with the various scholarship committees. Applying for scholarships can be a process, but it is well worth the required effort.”

Students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the Office of Title III in Room 111 in Lanier Hall or visit https://www.hbcut3a.org.
