Sigma Chi Iota inducts new members during Career Week

The Alpha Chapter of Sigma Chi Iota (SCI) held its semester induction ceremony Thursday, March 7 at the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility Gold Room. Approximately 135 students were granted membership into one of the honor society at Alcorn State University. Accompanying the week’s induction, were events scattered across the week held in the campus ballroom.

“Career week is an annual tradition here at Alcorn,” said Carey Butler, co-advisor of Sigma Chi Iota. “The purpose of career week is to prepare our students for graduate school as well as employment when it comes to internships and careers after graduation.”

The organization took a different approach this semester by not only having one day of mock interviews but two.

“Usually there is only one day of mock interviews,” he said. “But this year, we started off by having two days of mock interviews, then from there we went on to a panel roundtable with students and employers from our community.”

Members of the honors society have opportunities that could lend them to immediate career assistance as well as introducing them to real-world scenarios.

“For some time now, I lost sight of my future, but this week brought me back to realization,” said 21-year-old psychology major Sam Hurts of Greenville. “This event effectively gave me a glimpse of the real world. The professionals in the room gave excellent feedback to the individuals that participated.”

The main topic of discussion throughout the week was taking advantage of the opportunities that are given. Becoming a member of Sigma Chi Iota requires a 3.3 GPA.

“Being a part of this group is one of the greatest aspects in as student’s and employee’s life,” said Butler. “The benefits that come with it, if you stay active in the organization, opens so many doors for you. It allows you to travel to Washington, D.C. to the HBCU Connect, which is a career fair and workshop.”
