Social work student, Sparkle Davis looks forward to Canopy Children's Solutions internship

Sparkle Davis, a senior social work major at Alcorn State University, decided to major in social work because she wanted to learn the skills that are necessary to better serve her community with integrity and passion.

During the spring 2019 semester, Davis will intern at Canopy Children’s Solutions (formerly known as Mississippi Children’s Home services) in Natchez.

Davis found out about Canopy Children’s Solutions and the internship opportunities available while researching online during summer 2018. Canopy Children’s Solutions is Mississippi’s most comprehensive, non-profit provider of children’s behavioral health, educational, and social service solutions.

Canopy has served the children and families of Mississippi for over 100 years. Canopy advances the quality of behavioral health services in Mississippi and throughout the United States with their involvement and active participation in professional boards and organizations. Asides from social work opportunities, Canopy Children’s Solutions offers internships in a variety of career choices including administrative support, development, public relations, legal, and human resources.

Davis plans to apply the skills and knowledge she has learned at Alcorn to better serve the clients she encounter.

“At the internship, I will be assessing clients and implementing interventions that will allow children and families to become self-sufficient and ultimately transform their lives for the better. Also, this is another side of the social work field that most people are not aware of," said Davis.

After receiving her degree, Sparkle plans to obtain a job in the social work field and later attend graduate school at Louisiana State University to attain a master’s degree in social work. Sparkle stated how she is eager to achieve the goals she has set.

“I will thrive in my future profession by using my eagerness and passion to serve my community."
