Steve “Air II” McNair’s jersey officially retired, Alcorn President Nave proclaims Oct. 26 Steve “Air II” McNair Day
The iconic number nine football jersey, made famous by one of Alcorn State University’s most prolific football student-athletes, will never be worn again.
Steve “Air II” McNair’s Braves football jersey was officially retired on Sat. Oct. 26 at during a halftime ceremony of the Braves contest against the Southern Jaguars. The presentation at midfield of Spinks-Casem Stadium included Alcorn President Dr. Felecia M. Nave, Director of Athletics Derek Horne, Senior Woman Administrator Danielle Ferguson, “Voice of the Braves” Emanuel Barnes, Torrance Small and a host of McNair's former Braves teammates. McNair’s mother Ms. Lucille McNair and brother Tim McNair along with Mrs. Mechelle McNair and sons Steve McNair, Jr. and Trenton McNair joined the celebration of McNair’s legacy.
President Nave also declared Oct. 26 as Steve “Air II” McNair Day acknowledging McNair’s impact that spread from Alcorn to around the world.
“Steve had an impact on Alcorn, the SWAC, college football, the NFL, and the world,” said Nave. “Without question, he is the most iconic student-athlete in Alcorn’s history.”
The university takes pride in championing its legends. Emanuel Barnes, the “Voice of the Braves” for over thirty years, spoke highly of McNair’s time at Alcorn and how he transcended the quarterback position.
“We celebrate the best to wear the number nine,” said Barnes. “I know because I had the pleasure to witness his prolific athleticism. Steve was a magician, a leader, the ultimate Alcornite, and most of all, he was brave. We celebrate our legend because that is the Alcorn way.”
On behalf of McNair’s Alcorn teammates and classmates, Super Bowl champion and Braves letterman Torrance Small expressed appreciation for honoring one of the SWAC’s greatest of all times.
“We would like to say a special thank you to Alcorn, Mechelle and Momma Mac for allowing us to be a part of this blessed day and keeping number nine alive. Thank you.”
McNair’s wife, Mechelle McNair, recognized the cheers for McNair and his family over the years. She thanked everyone for their support and effort in keeping his legacy alive.
“Thank you for your unwavering support and continued prayers for Steve, his career, and his family,” said Mechelle. “Steve’s legacy will shine brighter because we are his legacy, and his legacy will continue forever.”
