The End of an Era: longtime English professors Dr. Lillie Jones and Dr. Peter Malik retire from Alcorn after decades of service

Two long-time Alcorn State University professors in the Department of English are closing the chapters on their teaching careers.

Dr. Lillie Jones and Dr. Peter Malik were recognized for their years of commitment during a special retirement ceremony given by the Department of English and Foreign Languages Tuesday, April 15 in the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility Gold Room. The two were accompanied by their colleagues as they celebrated the culmination of over 50 years of combined service to the university.

In over 30 years, Jones taught composition, global literature, modern black writers, senior seminar, and adolescent literature, while Malik spent 20 years teaching technical writing and composition.

When reflecting on their careers, the instructors revealed what it meant to them to be a part of the Alcorn family. They expressed their passion for shaping young minds and being selfless for the betterment of others.

“I have been very fortunate in my teaching experiences here at Alcorn,” said Jones. “I was able to teach the subjects I loved to students who were curious and interested in learning about them. Also, I have enjoyed being one member of a department which works really well together.”

“Teaching has been a rewarding experience because it let me know that I was part of something greater than myself. Alcorn is the most collegial place that I have ever been,” said Malik.

The students hold a special place in the hearts of Jones and Malik, and they will miss the interactions they had with them.

“I’ve enjoyed the teaching experience here, especially the ability to work closely with students in smaller sized classes. It has been wonderful to connect with students over the years,” said Jones.

“I have a ‘thank you’ board in my office where I pin the thank you notes and other expressions of appreciation that I have received over the years from students. That is why I stayed for two decades. It is nice to know that I have made a lasting impact,” said Malik.

In their retirement, Jones and Malik look forward to the unlimited amount of time they will have to explore what life has to offer.
