University College staff to participate in the upcoming Reading Across America event in Vicksburg

Staff members from Alcorn State University will spread the joy of reading to the youth at a Vicksburg, Mississippi elementary school.

Employees from University College will travel to Sherman Avenue Elementary School Friday, March 1 to participate in the school’s celebration of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America event. The event will take place in the school’s library at 8:30 a.m.

Alcorn is no stranger to partnering with Sherman Avenue for educational events. Back in October 2018, Addie Davis, an academic advisor at Alcorn, served as a judge for the school’s Reading Fair for the Pre-Kindergarten and Second-Grade divisions.

Davis stated the importance of preparing students to read at an early age.

“We must instill in them at an early age the importance of not only learning to read but also to read for understanding,” said Davis.

Dr. Valerie Thompson, dean of University College, hopes the partnership encourages the students to pursue an education at Alcorn in the future.

“This partnership can also be used as a recruitment mechanism to get children interested in attending college, specifically Alcorn State University,” said Thompson.
