Our Vision

Alcorn’s Gulf Scholars Program cultivates students who can imagine and create climate change solutions in the Gulf Coast region by thinking about sustainability from local to global perspectives. We prepare you to recognize how climate issues connect to larger social, cultural and historical contexts.

The Alcorn GSP draws inspiration from Octavia Butler’s classic novel Parable of the Sower. The protagonist, Lauren, faces a climate crisis and creates a philosophy called Earthseed, which begins: “All that you touch/You Change/All that you Change/Changes you./The only lasting truth/Is Change” (Butler 3). Like Lauren, everyone in the Alcorn community can create real change to fight climate issues and empower their communities for a more sustainable future.

What to Expect

Each year, we recruit ten freshmen and sophomore students from all majors to join the program. As a Gulf Scholar, you’ll:

  • Complete a minor in Sustainability Studies
  • Conduct an applied research project
  • Receive mentoring from faculty and peers
  • Participate in field trips and experiential learning
  • Engage in community service opportunities
  • Get funding to travel and present your research regionally, nationally and internationally

We also offer seminars, guest lectures and campus activities open to all Alcorn students, faculty and staff.
