1890 Distributed Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates
School/Department: Department of Agriculture, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences
Funding Agency: 1890 Center of Excellence for Student Success and Workforce Development
Our nation is encountering a shortage of trained agricultural scientists. The United States 1890 Land-Grant Institutions have a long history of training and producing agricultural scientists and professionals. To maintain the nation’s global competitiveness in agriculture, a highly trained workforce is critical. Alcorn State University will host a cohort of eight undergraduate students from both 1890 and 1862 Land-Grant universities. Students will receive hands-on experiential learning in agricultural food systems from the field to the table.
Students will interact and network with farmers, scientists, and professionals working on the front lines of producing, processing, distributing, and consuming food. Participants will engage in integrated research and extension projects in crop production, soil health, entomology, plant pathology, urban agriculture, forestry, agricultural biotechnology, and goat and poultry production. At the conclusion of the program, students will present oral and poster presentations at a closing research symposium and student-led sustainable agriculture field day.
