Mr. David M. Carter, Sr.
A native of Meridian, Mississippi in Lauderdale county, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts from Alcorn State University in 1971.
Mr. Carter’s professional career expands 28 years with the Mississippi Department of Education spending twenty-seven years in Meridian Public School District and 1 year in the Kemper County School District. After retiring from the Meridian Public School District, Mr. Carter dedicated ten years working with Mississippi Action for Progress, Inc. in Region III as Area Supervisor and Area Director where he provided innovative methods to improve teaching methods for headstart teachers.
As an educator, Mr. Carter’s classroom was visited by educators from Japan to observe his unique teaching methods in an attempt to duplicate them in Japan. He was also afforded the opportunity to visits schools in Germany to identify best practices in the area of industrial arts and bring those practices back to incorporate in his classroom.
Throughout his career, Mr. Carter attended countless professional development trainings and seminars to ensure he was knowledgeable in his chosen field including completing 32 hours from Mississippi State University in Farmers Home Administration and Housing Development, Mississippi Power Company Duct Design, Computer Enrichment-PASCAL, Auto-Cad 12, completing 40 hours at University of Southern Mississippi in Safety in Industry. These training enabled him to equip his students with the newest and most innovative techniques.
Mr. Carter is a member of several organizations and club and have won numerous awards including active member of the Meridian/Lauderdale Alcorn Alumni Chapter where he serves as assistant treasurer, Alcorn State University National Alumni Association, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.; member of Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World; 20 year member of the Mississippi Primary Health Care Association; board member of the Greater Meridian Health Clinic and Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. Consequently, he is a member of the Union Baptist Church in Scooba, Mississippi where he serves as a deacon. Mr. Carter used the skills he learned at Alcorn to draw the blueprints and design for the new Union Baptist Church.
Mr. Carter can often be seen in his community assisting the elderly and needy with various in home services at no cost. He has done countless pro bono electrical and plumbing work for the elderly and needy in the Meridian and Scooba community. He is a member of the Meridian React Team which is a group of community men who assist with evacuation of the elderly when needed, an auxiliary deputy with the local sheriff department, and boyscout troop leader for Troop 35.
Moreover, Mr. Carter is a strong advocate for Alcorn State University. He is an annual contributor to the Alcorn State University Foundation, 1M Brave Strong Challenge contributor, and member of the ASU Foundation 1871 Club.
Mr. Carter is married to Dollie Johnson Carter and they have three adult children: David, Jr., Alicia and Terrence. They reside in Meridian, Mississippi.
