Code of Conduct Policies

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science. The department offers degree programs majoring in computer science, math, and math education. There is a high demand in the job market for all these majors. The remarkable record of the job placement of our graduates demonstrates the quality of our programs and the tremendous demand of the job market for our majors.

Our department offers a curriculum in computer science that is compatible with the mainstream computer science programs in the academic world. Our graduates were admitted by other institutions such as Georgia Tech and John Hopkins and did great job in their further studies. Our degree programs in Math and Math Education also prepare our students for graduate study in these fields.

Our curriculum keeps a balance of the students need for immediate employment and life-time career. Not only it prepares students for jobs when they graduate, it also gives students a general knowledge background in the field and develops their research capability. Our graduates get better chance for further develop in their future work than those who receive training only on technical skills.

The department has special assistantship/scholarship in addition to what is offered by the university. Since 2005, the department has received over 1.6 million dollars of grant. Part of the grant is used to provide tuition assistantship for our graduate students. Part of the grant is used to provide student assistantship for our undergraduate students to work in the Math Center. C-Spire provides a special scholarship for two Computer Science Majors who are Mississippi residents every year. C-Spire also invites the recipients to have internship in the company.

The department reaches out to create opportunities for our students. The chief of the Division of Information Technology of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) serves as one of our program advisors. The department joins a university program to team with Mobile Collaborative Education Consulting to give our students firsthand experience to work on the state of art mainframe computers and train and introduce our students for the jobs in Fortune 500 companies. Our students are doing interns in the ERDC and local business.

Don’t think you have to be very exceptional to join us – our faculty members will help you from the first day you become a member of us. Each student in our department has a faculty advisor, who will help the student to plan study, solve problems, and introduce opportunities.
