SACS reaffirms Alcorn State University
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC) announced today at its annual meeting in Orlando, Florida, that Alcorn State University received reaffirmation of accreditation demonstrating compliance with SACS core requirements.
The reaffirmation process occurs every 10 years and involves an in-depth internal evaluation and report of all of the university’s programs and operations. Reaffirmation is not only important to Alcorn with regard to its ability to offer federal financial aid, but it also indicates that its programs meet or exceed national standards.
The campus community was praised for a successful four-day site visit by a 10-member team from SACS in March 2011. “Alcorn has been through an intensive self-review process assessing our institutional effectiveness and examining its educational missions, goals, and expected outcomes, and making performance improvements as needed,” says Executive Vice President and Provost Samuel L. White.
Alcorn State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist degrees. SACS is a private, non-governmental organization that accredits educational institutions in the southern states of the United States. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC) is recognized by the United States Department of Education.
“I commend the Alcorn family for a job well done and for the tremendous effort that many have spent over the years to insure our success. Reaffirmation confirms our commitment to the highest standards of teaching, research and service, and is a true indicator of the rigor and quality teaching and learning that takes place at Alcorn,” says President Brown with gratitude and satisfaction. “A special thank you to the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) and Commissioner Hank Bounds for their support, and we must certainly recognize Dr. Norris Allen Edney, interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, who led the majority of the accreditation process.”
