Alcorn student wins Thurgood Marshall College Fund Outstanding Service Award
Alcorn State University’s Magan Collins, a senior majoring in business administration and a Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) student ambassador, received a prestigious Outstanding Service Award at the TMCF Member Universities Professional Institute (MUPI) in Miami, Florida, on March 20, 2012.
“I am truly honored to have received this award and recognition for my dedication to TMCF and the Student Ambassadors Program,” said excited Magan, who has been serving as the Alcorn State University Student Ambassador for TMCF for the past two years. “It was a great and beneficial experience that led to a leadership role as a Student Ambassador Advisory Council (SAAC) member, and has allowed me to acquire professional traits that must be experienced rather than taught in a traditional classroom setting. During TMCF conferences, I had a chance to network with my fellow peers as well as top executives of national and international businesses, corporations, and agencies. My experiences with the TMCF family together have sharpened my leadership abilities by encouraging me to step forward and take action.”
The TMCF student ambassadors serve as campus liaisons at their respective universities creating a bridge between students and TMCF for communicating information regarding the fund’s conferences, internships, job opportunities, and scholarships. During her tenure, Magan has participated in three Leadership Institute Conferences, two Member Universities Professional Institute conferences, one Civic Responsibility Conference, and had a summer internship with the federal government.
As Magan plans to graduate in May 2012, her post-graduation plans are already set: she will be working for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). “I participated in their pilot program, Financial Management Scholars, and interned in Nashville, Tennessee. The internship opportunity also came from the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.”
Alcorn President M. Christopher Brown II, Vice President for Institutional Affairs, Marcus Ward, Vice President for Student Affairs, Cheryl Ponder, and Senior Vice President for Administration and Chief Financial Officer, Betty Roberts were also in attendance at the MUPI conference when Megan received her award.
Also present was Arielle Buchmann, Alcorn’s new student ambassador that will take over beginning fall 2012. Arielle, a junior majoring in mass communication, shared, “I am thrilled to have received this amazing opportunity and thankful to Alcorn and TMCF for facilitating it. I look forward to this challenge and following Magan’s excellent example.”
