Elementary education major awarded scholarship
Each year, Mississippi Professional Educators (MPE) offers a scholarship to a MPE student member from each of Mississippi’s public and private institutions of higher learning. At its 2012 Convention held on April 13 and 14, at the Hilton Jackson, Alcorn senior Miriam Timmons was one of eleven recipients of a $500 scholarship.
“It felt wonderful to be recognized and rewarded for all of my hard work,” expressed Timmons. “I believe hard work is its own reward but it is very satisfying to be acknowledged for doing your best. I always give 100 percent to everything that I do.”
The elementary education major was nominated by Associate Professor and Director of Student Teaching in the Department of Education and Psychology at Alcorn Dr. Jan Duncan. “I nominated Miriam because over the years I have observed and admired her service as a student and now fellow educator. Her enthusiasm, professionalism, work ethic and keen insight are well-known and appreciated by students in the classroom and her college peers. I expect Miriam to become a phenomenonal educator.”
Timmons is a lifetime member of Phi Theta Kappa. The president’s scholar enjoys quilting with the Natchez Quilting Guild and plans to a teach kindergarten through third grade after graduating.
