Jackson’s Bradley Elementary presents ceramic mosaic of Medgar Evers to Alcorn
Principal Dionne Woody and Bradley Elementary (https://bradley.jpsms.org/) students presented a ceramic mosaic (28”x42”) of Medgar Wiley Evers ’52 as a gift to Alcorn State University on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.
Ms. DeLacey Bridges ’95, literacy coach at Bradley, worked with students to create this portrait through a collaborative effort with Ask 4 More Arts program (https://www.ppsjackson.org/askformoreart.html). The third, fourth and fifth grade students chose Mr. Evers as the subject because their school is in the Medgar Evers community and is located directly behind the Medgar Evers Library.
Recently, the Jackson Public School District announced that Bradley was on their list for closure this summer due to re-zoning. Students and teachers decided to donate the portrait so that it can continue to be admired and appreciated.
“We could not think of a better place for it than with his widow and at Alcorn,” Bridges said.
“We are so proud of these students and their achievements,” Vice President for Institutional Affairs and Interim Executive Director of the ASU Foundation Marcus Ward said. “It is an honor for Alcorn to partner with local schools in advancing the arts. This is a wonderful and inspirational piece that will make a great addition to the Medgar Evers Auditorium foyer in the J.D. Boyd Library.”
