Alcorn prepares for Homecoming fans

And it’s Homecoming! To insure the safety of Alcorn alumni and fans attending the game on Saturday, September 29, the Department of Athletics working with campus police has implemented traffic management strategies to improve vehicle and crowd flow.

“Fan cooperation and support is needed for all to have a great game day experience,” says Chief Melvin Maxwell. “Our traffic strategies will create a smoother flow of traffic and less frustration.”

According to Chief Melvin Maxwell, beginning at the campus entrance, all traffic will be (one way) coming onto campus off of the Dr. Walter Washington Memorial Parkway (Highway 552) beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Alcorn is working with MDOT Law Enforcement and Mississippi Highway Patrol to provide improved traffic management and response. Additional personnel will monitor and help direct traffic to avoid blocked intersections, potential bottlenecks or other problems.

The Homecoming Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. and the route will start at the Campus Safety Center. Parade participants will enter campus through the back entrance gate using the right lane while traveling the Dr. Walter Washington Memorial Parkway (Highway 552). The parade route will be closed at 9:00 AM and traffic will not be allowed to flow west of the K.L. Simmons Technology Building. Parade participants bus parking will be at the Bio-Tech and Math and Science buildings. The J.D. Boyd Library and the Honors Dormitory will serve as headquarters for floats and cars that need to be dressed.

All other parade participants will be directed where to park by members of the Parade Committee. Questions concerning the parade, contact the Division of Student Affairs at 601.877.6380.

Stadium gates will open at 12:00 noon and the game kicks off at 2:00 p.m., tailgating fans are urged to plan earlier-than-normal morning arrivals to minimize traffic congestion. RVs and campers are reminded that unloading and set up times are key in aiding the process and are encouraged to not leave vehicles unattended.

If fans have any concerns while on campus says Chief Maxwell, “Contact the nearest law enforcement officer or call the ASU Department of Public Safety at 601.877.3000.”
