Director of Alcorn’s Vicksburg Program completes doctorate in educational administration and supervision

Cheryl Kariuki, director of the Alcorn State University Vicksburg Program, has completed the Doctoral Program in Educational Administration and Supervision at Jackson State University. Kariuki presented a dissertation on September 24, 2012, “A Comparative Study of the Academic Performance of Developmental Education Students and Regular Admitted Students at Alcorn State University”.

“I chose to do my study on developmental education because institutions now enroll more students who would not have attended college in the past and many of these students require a range of support programs, such as developmental education,” Kariuki indicated. “Because colleges and universities are operating on tightened budgets as a result of our current economic situation, student retention and graduation rates have become increasingly important. Therefore, colleges and universities must endeavor to provide academic support services for students who are less prepared than their classmates and it is important that studies are done to investigate whether or not these programs have a significant influence on students’ academic performance. Studies of this nature are also helpful mechanisms for making program improvements.”

Kariuki will receive the Doctor of Philosophy Degree at Commencement Exercises at Jackson State University on December 8, 2012.
