Alcorn’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite headed to 2013 Honda Battle of the Bands
Alcorn State, Miss. (January 24, 2013) – “The day we all have been preparing for and anticipating with both, anxiety and excitement is finally here,” exclaimed Alcorn State University’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band member Robert Johnson, a senior majoring in political science. “We are going to the Honda Battle of the Bands!”
Tishonia Hawkins, a junior majoring in elementary education, and a member of the Golden Girls dance troupe added, “It is a great opportunity and responsibility to represent the University in this competition. We have been practicing a lot and now we are ready to show the world what Alcorn’s true colors are!”
The total of 195 students, band director, band staff and several faculty and staff members departed Alcorn on January 24, 2013 heading to Atlanta, Georgia, where the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite will participate in the prestigious Honda Battle of the Bands Invitational Showcase at the Georgia Dome, 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26.
“We are planning to arrive to Atlanta Thursday evening, settle in, and hold a band rehearsal at the Georgia Dome on Friday morning,” shared Dr. Renardo Murray, band director. “Later on, we will also have a rehearsal with all the bands that are participating in the competition, to get ready for the actual showcase on Saturday.” He added, “The students are a little bit nervous, but once they start performing, they will be okay. Students have been so diligent and hard working the whole year. I am proud of them and I am sure they will put on a great show to entertain an audience of several thousand people.”
Dr. Larry Konecky, chairperson of the Department of Fine Arts stated, “We are very much honored that the band was selected to perform in this prestigious showcase. We are proud to have them represent the University and look forward to enjoying their performance.”
