Alcorn’s Director of Inventory receives highest award for property management
The Mississippi Association of Governmental Purchasing/Property Agents (MAGPPA) awarded Jerry Sims ’73, director of University Inventory at Alcorn, 2013 Property Manager of the Year at its Public Procurement Month Celebration in Grenada, Mississippi, on March 20. “This award speaks highly of Alcorn’s ability to manage property. It shows that we are good stewards of our assets,” shared a humbled Sims.
Each year during its Celebration, MAGPPA solicits nominees from its membership for four awards of distinction to honor specific members based on their level of commitment to their entity, MAGPPA and the public procurement profession. Recipients of these awards are nominated by their peers in the profession and selected by an awards committee within the membership base.
“MAGPPA is proud to honor Jerry for his accomplishments, service to Alcorn and his contributions to our organization,” expressed Mike Roberts, president, MAGPPA.
Under his direction, Alcorn has received more than two dozen clean state property audits. Sims shares, “One of the main reasons the University is so successful is because of the internal audits we conduct, and the support of people like my supervisor Carolyn Du’Pre, vice president for Fiscal Affairs, and property staff, and employees at the University that understand the importance of inventory accountability and the preparation it takes for state audits. I would not have received this award without this support and commitment to excellence.”
“This distinction is such a positive reflection of his leadership in this arena,” said Dr. Betty Roberts, senior vice president for University Operations and COO. “Alcorn benefits greatly from Sims bringing such wonderful recognition for a job well done.”
In 2010, Sims represented Alcorn at a MAGPPA conference in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he presented on the value of the physical inventory, inventory frequency, data collection, the inventory plan, conducting the inventory and reconciliation. He received the Property Officer of the Year Award in 2003 and has the recognition as one of the first property officers to become certified in the state of Mississippi. Sims is a member of the National Property Management Association and was instrumental in starting the first chapter in Mississippi. His career at Alcorn spans over 30 years.
