Advanced Technologies students secure internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Fisk University
Alcorn State, MS (May 31, 2013) – Alcorn State University’s Department of Advanced Technologies is proud of its students George Osei and Innocent Tsorxe for securing prestigious internships for this summer.
George Osei, who received his bachelor’s degree in health physics in May 2013, will intern at the prestigious Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and work under Dr. Ches Simpson, ASU Health Physics (HP) department research partner. In the fall, George will come back to Alcorn to work on his master’s in radiological health sciences/health physics.
Innocent Tsorxe, a senior in the HP program, will be working with Dr. Arnold Burger at Fisk University and Dr. Stephen Babalola from Alabama A&M. Dr. Kwabena Agyepong, the department chairman, stated, “We are elated to learn about our students new endeavors. It is a priority of the Department to provide our students with opportunities for research experience and networking with peers and researchers at other institutions.”
Jermiah Billa, HP program coordinator, who spearheaded the program’s recent expansion and research collaboration development with LANL, Fisk University, Alabama A&M University and Jackson State University, and was instrumental in the securing of more than one million dollars in various grants, added, “During the course of study at the HP program, our students acquire substantial research experience. George and Innocent earned a great opportunity to develop their skills and broaden their horizons during this summer. George will intern within the computational division at LANL working on simulation of some practical aspects of radiation detectors, while Innocent will work on characterization and fabrication of radiation detectors.”
Dr. Steve Adzanu, senior faculty underlined the importance of the departmental faculty spending substantial time on student research. “The experience our students gain helps them to sustain in their professional lives.”
