Alcorn’s AG Academy 2013 completes with success

About thirty kids between the ages of 6 and 12 participated in the Alcorn State University AG Academy 2013, an agricultural and technical training summer camp held June 1-28 on the Lorman campus.

“The participants were involved in activities intended to empower each individual child and provide a learning experience that introduces them to leadership opportunities within an agricultural framework,” stated Dr. Kenneth Stallings, Department of Agriculture. “The program also focused on technology, production, environmental stewardship and agricultural literacy.”

The highlights of the camp included a trip to Washington, D.C. where the participants visited the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, the National Air and Space Museum, and the Museum of African Art, as well as the National Mall, the White House, and other sites.

Additionally, AG Academy showcased segments of the agricultural industry during visits to Birmingham, Alabama, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Stallings added, “The focal point for this outreach project is to expose children to a stream of agricultural practices and develop them as catalysts within their own communities. Consistent family involvement and community support are key components that nurture the child’s knowledge gained as a result of attending AG Academy.”

Phase II of AG Academy 2013 is scheduled to begin July 8, 2013.

Additionally, planning is underway for the 2014 camp, during which participants will explore the agriculture industries in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi.
