Saturday Science Academy accepts applications for 5th graders from Claiborne and Jefferson counties
Attention parents, Saturday Science Academy is now accepting applications for 5th grade students from Claiborne and Jefferson counties for the 2013-2014 program year!
Saturday Science Academy is funded by a federal Title III grant to provide hands-on enrichment activities in math and science to the middle school students in the Jefferson and Claiborne county school districts. Its goal is to address the disparity in the number of African-Americans in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related careers.
“We would like to encourage parents to register their children early as present funding provides for a limited number of student participants this year,” said Director Mary Marie Trimble.
Saturday Science Academy is one of many community outreach projects offered at Alcorn State University impacting the quality of education in the community. Participation in this project is free. Classes will meet three Saturdays per month throughout the fall and spring semesters.
“Your child will enjoy the fun way we teach math and science at Saturday Science Academy!” added Trimble. “The state-of-the-art labs at Alcorn State University, interactive educational tours and the variety of instructional approaches used are part of the learning experiences children crave.”
Addressing students, Ms. Trimble said, “We hope our students will keep up their excellent attendance and participate in all of the fun learning activities we have planned for them. This year will be filled with many challenges and even greater rewards. In the months ahead you will learn and experience many new things as you explore our labs and participate in our workshops, seminars and educational trips. We hope that each student will learn as much as they can from their instructors and ultimately have a great year!”
