Alcorn Homecoming 2013
Lorman, Miss. (September 27, 2013) – Homecoming is nigh, and Alcorn is welcoming home all the Braves across the Magnolia state and the nation. The big game, Bridget Kelly and J. Holiday, a homecoming parade and a Greek show that’ll have folks talking noise ‘til next year highlight this year’s weeklong celebration. And we’re all excited about crowning the new Miss Alcorn.
The main event comes 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Braves take on Warner University at Jack Spinks –Marino Casem Stadium. We’re expecting a full house that day and bragging rights for the best tailgating are up for grabs. Get your grills, charcoal and team spirit fired up! Tickets for the public are $20.
“A Brave New World,” Alcorn’s 2013 homecoming celebration, kicks off at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 with a Gospel Explosion, a concert featuring Le’Andria Johnson, Trey McLaughlin and The Sounds of Zamar. The two-hour show will be at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.
Comedian DeRay Davis will gather laughs 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, Sept. 30 at the David L. Whitney Complex. Tickets for those who aren’t currently enrolled at Alcorn are $20.
Good looks take center stage 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 1 when the Fashion, Hair and Art show take over the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. Those who find themselves a little hungry can feast on a Midnight Breakfast from 10 p.m. to midnight Tuesday at the Clinton L. Bristow Jr. Dining Facility.
The Career Fair gives students and alumni a chance to meet face to face with potential employers. The Career Fair runs 9 a.m. to noon at the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom.
Ready to shake hands with Lady Luck? Well, come take your chances at the Vegas Strip: Let the Games Begin. The simulated gambling runs 7 to 11 p.m. at Campus Plaza & Campus Green. If there’s rain, we’ll move to the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium, but let’s roll the dice for a bit of Alcorn luck.
Campus Beautification Day pairs students with Facilities Management who’ll direct them in keeping their home clean. Students and alumni are encouraged to spiff up the campus from 7 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3.
Intellectuals will gather 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Medgar Evers Auditorium at the J.D Boyd Library for Knowing Their Place … in Herstory: A Symposium on Black Women and the Fight for Equality. The Office of Education Equity and Inclusion is sponsoring this event.
Come witness the coronation of Miss Alcorn State University during a special ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. And — to give her a chance to get used to her new crown — a reception will follow.
The Beneath the Shade Homecoming Concert is set for 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 4 at the Davey L. Whitney complex. J. Holiday and Bridget Kelly will belt out a few hits for new-school music fans. General admission tickets are $20. Saturday’s festivities kick off at 10 a.m. with the homecoming parade. Yes, you’ll get a chance to see the new Miss Alcorn and hear the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite lay it down like no other band in the nation. We’ll need all Braves on hand at 2 p.m. when the team kicks off against Warner University. Join the – cheerleaders and let’s see how much excitement we can drum up.
Those of you who used to step may want to get a good look at the youngsters at the Greek Step Show hosted by Phillip & Emmanuel Hudson. The event is set for 7 p.m. at the David L. Whitney Complex. Tickets are $10 at the door the night of the event. No worries alumni, you can show the new generation a few old school steps after service on Sunday.
