Alcorn to host lecture by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations of the United Nations
Lorman, Miss. (October 14, 2013) – The Alcorn State University Office of Global Programs in partnership with Humpty Dumpty Institute (HDI) will host the United Nations Peacekeeping Challenges: Supporting the Peace lecture at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013, in the Medgar Evers Auditorium of the J.D. Boyd Library.
Speakers from the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the U.S. Mission to the United Nations will speak on U.N. peacekeeping and discuss its missions around the world. They will explain how the mission is funded, run and how it interacts with various other U.N. institutions and local governments. Speakers will also discuss the U.S. role in supporting U.N. peacekeeping operations around the world, both militarily and politically.
“These lectures are delivered by senior UN officials, diplomats and experts in their field,” said Dr. Dovi Alipoe, director of the Office of Global Programs at Alcorn State University. “The series will be highly beneficial to students of all majors as well the entire university and surrounding community, enhancing understanding of international issues and building knowledge of global citizenship.”
Alcorn State University is a member of HDI’s Higher Education Alliance, which helps create the next generation of global leaders by connecting institutions of higher education with the United Nations. HDI will also arrange a UN-related conference at Alcorn on November 19, 2013, to coincide with International Education Week.
The lecture series and the conference will focus on international trade, international business, sustainable development, food security, careers in the Foreign Service, conflict, peacekeeping, poverty and current events. In addition, HDI will arrange for a specialized, tailor-made orientation at UN headquarters for up to 15 participants from Alcorn State University in spring 2014. Students and faculty who sign up for the Model UN Club at Alcorn State University will be eligible to participate.
