We are…writers. We are Alcorn.
Lorman, Miss. (February 7, 2014) – Alcorn State University has educated an array of talented individuals who credit the University for developing their natural talents and sending them off to the “real world” fully equipped for attaining success in their chosen fields. Today, we would like to share about two Aconites who distinguished themselves as talented authors.
Elliott O. Ashley and his book “The Bully Brakers” and Sybil Arrington and her book “My Choice, Which Road?” were recently featured at the Birmingham Library Authors Expo, Birmingham, Alabama. They both greeted guests, discussed the plots of their books and the inspiration for writing them.
Both authors remember their alma mater with gratitude and warmth. Ironically, while studying at Alcorn, they were both members of the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite marching band under the direction of Samuel L. Griffin, and Arrington served as flag captain.
“We would like to share about our successes with the Alcorn family and our fellow alumni,” stated Ashley, who has served as a guidance counselor in Birmingham City Schools for 22 years. His highly educational, action packed children’s novel “The Bully Brakers” was recently published by Crest Publishers, LLC.
“This creation deals with the five types of bullies, four types of bystanders and the two types of victims,” explained Ashley. “In addition, it tackles lots of the issues that plague African-Americans. Alcorn State University is mentioned several times within this book. As an inner city guidance counselor it seems that these students are negating the opportunities that await them at our HBCUs. ‘The Bully Brakers’ speaks out to them with Alcorn at the forefront.”
