Alcorn’s Swine Research Farm to Hold Field Day

Alcorn State University’s Swine Development Center will hold its annual Pork Producers Field Day on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Swine Research and Development Farm, 2453 Hog Farm Road, Church Hill, Mississippi.

Registration will be held from 9 – 10 a.m., with no cost for attending. The event will cover topics on general swine production and management, and practices required for successful commercial small scale hog production.

“The purpose of Field Day is to introduce current and innovative research done at the Swine Development Center,” said Dr. Michael Ezekwe, director.

All farmers and prospective farmers are encouraged to come and explore how swine operations can benefit from pasture pork production.

“This is the one time of the year when we open up our facilities for producers and potential producers to learn practical hog production, the latest production techniques, and demonstration of skills in swine husbandry,” added Ezekwe.

The speaker for the program will be Frank Taylor with the Winston County Self-Help Cooperative. Information on the availability of loan sources for start-ups and/or for expansion of existing farms, record keeping methods, as well as hog marketing outlets will be presented. A tour of the facilities will be conducted, followed by a demonstration of farming practices. Lunch will be provided.
